Presentation Types

Director, Shockwave, and Flash Presentations

DiskJockey originated as a tool for exporting Director presentations to CD-ROM, and continues to support both Director and Flash projects.  These presentations are handled by the DirectorPlayer, a native Macromedia playback engine.

To exit the player, use the lingo command "quit" in your Director presentation.  If your project is a Flash file, make this URL call:  getURL "lingo:quit"

QuickTime and MPEG Movies

For maximum efficiency, QuickTime and MPEG video files are played directly by the launcher.  The scaling options are normal, double, half-size, and full-screen.  When the video ends, the program quits.  If the movie is located on the web, or if a QTVR movie, you must exit the player manually. Press "ESC", or "CNTRL-Q" to quit.

Cross-Platform Executables

To specify executables for both Mac and Windows, give each the same name, and specify either as your presentation file.  For example: "MyProgram.exe" and "MyProgram.app"

URLs and Web Presentations

DiskJockey can create CD-ROMs that launch your website upon disc insertion. Both URLs and HTML files can be used, for both online and on-disc websites.  Hold the CTRL key and click the "URL..." button to enter your web address.

Plugin installation is also supported, which allows the use of IPIX, RealPlayer, and other browser plugins.  Web-based Director and Flash presentations can also be used, as well as online QuickTime and MPEG movies.

Other File Types

Other presentation types are launched with the default application on the system.  For example, if your presentation is a ".ppt" file, DiskJockey opens your document in PowerPoint.  The same applies for many other file types.

In many cases, a default application may not be present, which results in failure.  To overcome this, specify your presentation type in the "Software" panel of the DiskJockey window, and supply an installer for handling your presentation type.

For example, if your presentation is a PowerPoint presentation, download the PowerPoint Viewer installer.  Next, specify ".ppt" as the file type in the "Software" panel of the DiskJockey window.  Press the "Installer..." button, and select the PowerPoint Player installer.  Now, even if your users do not have PowerPoint, your presentation will play.

Installation

Your program can run directly from the CD, or be installed first.  Games, kiosks, and high-performance multimedia projects run more efficiently from hard disk than from CD.

DiskJockey provides a single interface for managing your cross-platform installations.  These functions will be  available in the next release.

QuickTime and Other Software

Third-party software is often required for many applications.  Your program may require QuickTime, for example.  If QuickTime is not found on your user's computer, DiskJockey handles the installation.  Get the single-component QuickTime installer.

If your program requires other software, specify the file type in the edit field.  Use ".pdf" if your program requires Acrobat Reader, or ".doc" for the Word Viewer, etc.  For Mac installations, use the four-character Mac creator code (such as "PDF ", and "WDBN").

Press the "Installer..." buttons to select the QuickTime and/or other software installers.

Custom Icons

The Windows icon file must be an ".ico" file.  The Mac icon must be of type "ICNS".  To create a single file that represents the icon for both Mac and Windows:

  1. Create a Windows ".ico" file, and a Mac "ICNS" file.
  2. Select your "ICNS" file (in the Finder), and choose "Get Info..." from the "File" menu.
  3. Click the icon in the upper left corner of the Info window.  Select "Copy" from the "Edit" menu.
  4. Select your Windows ".ico" file (from step #1), and choose "Get Info..." from the "File" menu.
  5. Click the icon image well, and select "Paste" from the "Edit" menu.  Close the window.
  6. Drop this icon file onto DiskJockey's disc icon image well.

Disc Images

In addition to burning CD-ROMs, you can export standard ISO files (Win only).  ISO files, or disc images, can be emailed to your disc duplication service, or put on the web.  To export your project as an ISO file, select "Save as disc image..." from the "File" menu.  To burn existing ISO files to CD-ROM, select "Burn Disc Image...".
